Lily James is every bit as stunning in real life as she is in photos. This alluring young girl has a twinkle in her eye and naivety about her that makes her a breath of fresh air and a delight to be around. She’s the kind of girl that we all hope our young daughters grow up to be: strong, independent, beautiful, and smart: she’s impossibly perfect as Ella. Jubilance and light radiated from her seat as she shared with us her journey as Ella, even if she was a little surprised by the amount of mom bloggers in the room, Lily’s first comment to us: “There’s so many people.”

On her fantastic shoes at the red carpet premiere
Lily: I was wearing Louboutins. I loved that they looked so beautiful and princess-y and then they had the killer red sole, it was great.
On preparing for the role of Cinderella
Lily: I started horse riding lessons because I’d never ridden before. I had to bare back as well, so every second I wasn’t filming Downton [Abbey], I was at this farm learning to ride. Then I did yoga to sort of try and feel in my body and graceful and breathe properly.
Then I was just working on the script on back story. When I met with Ken, he was like, ‘I want to know, does Ella sleep with the blinds open or closed, what does she dream about, what’s her favorite food.’ He wanted for me to know all those details so that I could sort of just exist on set being her.
On the message of Cinderella and how it is relevant to young girls today
Lily: This is a girl that’s not sitting around waiting for a prince to come and save her. She’s got this unbelievable strength, and it doesn’t come from fighting. It comes from within. The strength is her courage and her kindness and if she has that, she can deal with what life throws at her.
By being this person, she’s being the best version of herself. With such an open heart, when she does meet the prince not knowing who he is, he falls for her because she’s a strong, powerful, beautiful from within woman. That’s the idea.
On THE Dress, the blue ball gown, and what it was like when she first put it on
Lily: The dress is insane. When I first put it on, there’s a scene from Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts where she puts this dress on and she looks in the mirror and, I think Richard Gere is looking really handsome somewhere, and she just goes like ‘swoosh, swoosh.’ She makes this sound, and I put it on and I felt like Julia Roberts, it was just the best feeling ever. I was so nervous about this bit of the movie because it’s the bit where she’s the princess. It’s the moment, you know, and I think, ‘How can anyone live up to that?’
Really, it’s this fairy tale, it’s this sort of thing that’s very far removed from me. And then I put on that gown and I just felt transformed, and it felt like a suit of honor. It was really hard to wear, and it was incredibly tight, and it had a life of it’s own basically.
It was crazy heavy, and it pulled down on my waist, and it took about 20 minutes to get in and 20 minutes to get out. [LAUGHS] It was kind of cool, because it was almost like a ritual every morning. I’d have my dress, we’d start from the very bottom and slowly, it would take a bit of time, we’d have some music on. The only thing was if I needed to toilet. [LAUGHS] You’re always so rushed when you’re filming, so it would be like a 40-minute break, so the crew would be like, ‘God, where’s Lily?’
Helena and I had same problem, so in the end, we had these port-a-loos that we’d put under us. [LAUGHS] And it was the most unglamorous thing ever. [LAUGHS] So Helena and I would sometimes be in our tent and be next door and be both using the port-a-loos at the same time [LAUGHS]
On the Glass Slippers
Lily: They were really made out of Swarovski crystals, so, even more amazing. They’re so beautiful but, sadly—I hate saying this—they don’t fit any human foot. [LAUGHS] I’m glad it’s no foot, just not my foot. If it was just my foot it didn’t fit, I’d feel really un-Cinderella-y. So the prince is still looking for his princess. [LAUGHS]
On dancing at the ball
Lily: The dance switched from being the most beautiful, romantic moment of my life, to being one of the most stressful and hardest. Because the dress was so heavy and it was so delicate—it ripped basically if Richard looked at it. [LAUGHS] So we learned the dance, we were getting really smart, we’d been doing it for months at Pinewood studios in London with these incredible choreographers. And then suddenly they were like, ‘Okay, the dress’ and I almost fainted. I thought, ‘The dress, of course, how are we going do this in the dress?’
And I had a complete nervous breakdown [LAUGHS]. Richard had to ice skate so he didn’t step on it. He had to slide his feet. And you know, 5 minutes later, the skirt would catch up. [LAUGHS] But there was a few takes where we ran it real time so I would start outside the doors, I’d knock on the doors, I came in, I walked down the steps, the music started, I walked toward Richard, and we danced.

On her period work preparing her for the role of Cinderella
Lily: From doing the period work, there’s a way that you stand. There’s a sort of an etiquette and a grace that I really wanted her to have. From the animation, there a few things, and one of them was her physicality. I wanted it. In a real way, for Cinderella to be graceful, and I think that it helped from doing Downton [Abbey]. I also think, in a way, because we shot this a year and a half ago, before the final series, Ella influenced that series of Rose a bit. Rose became so nice.
On the Wedding Dress
Lily: I wanted [Sandy Powell] to do me a dress for the premiere last night. I was like, ‘Sandy.’ [LAUGHS] She’s amazing. I feel so sad that it was only in the film for like 30 seconds. I was like, ‘Ken, you’ve gotta shoot it from the back, you’ve gotta shoot it from the back.’ Because the flowers were hand painted, and you know the detail that goes into these dresses!
That veil, and the crown, and actually we did the hair how Cinderella in the animation wears it at the ball, so that was a kind of like little echo. I was doing a photo shoot in it one day when we were so busy, and I rushed in and we did the photos. At Pinewood Studios, it’s England and it’s cold and it’s miserable and gray. And I rushed in, I was so cold and I was walking past this heater and my skirt caught on fire. And I didn’t care about myself I was like, ‘the skirt!!’ It was all hand-painted flowers, and they had to redo, like a whole section of the skirt.
On her reaction to learning she was cast as Ella
Lily: Ken rang me himself, and I screamed so loudly I’m sure I burst his eardrum. He said, ‘I want you to be my Cinderella.’ And I was on set and I screamed. And Laura and Michelle came running over and, and they knew I’d been doing this torturous audition process, and they’re like, ‘What is it, what is it?’ And then Ken was like, ‘You’re not allowed to tell anyone.’ So, I was like, ‘Oh, nothing, nothing.’ And then, later that day Hugh Bonneville announced the Downton dining room table. It was really sweet.
On being made into a doll
Lily: No, I don’t have any yet, but Helena texted me a picture of one last night. [LAUGHS] It’s so, so weird. [LAUGHS] Yeah, Helena was like, ‘You’re officially a Barbie doll.’ And then she put ‘Love, FGM, your Fairy Godmother’ and wished me luck.
