We all know a good Girls’ Getaway Weekend starts with the friends you travel with. After all, you can’t have a Girls’ Getaway Weekend with out your best girlfriends. But equally important to the success of your girls’ weekend away is the location of your getaway and the activities you choose.
At Barrios Fine Mexican Dishes in OKC with Nicky, Melissa, and Carol.
Plan a Girls Getaway Weekend in Oklahoma City
Recently I spent a weekend in Oklahoma City with some girlfriends for a Girls Getaway Weekend in OKC. Not only was it my first time in OKC, but it was my first time in Oklahoma! If you’re looking for girls’ getaway ideas, OKC has some incredible ones! I travel a lot with Carol for entertainment work (and we live in the same town, so I see her not as often as I would like, but often), and I find myself frequently in the same places as Nicky for travel-related conferences. I almost never see Melissa, though, so it was a treat to have them all in the same place at the same time.
Thanks to the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau for hosting my Girls’ Getaway Weekend. As always, all opinions are my own.
Glamping in Conestoga Wagons at Orr Family Farm
We started our Girls Getaway Weekend by glamping at Orr Family Farm. Have you ever been glamping? I hadn’t until now! We’re a family of tent campers, so glamping always seemed a foreign concept to us. I fell in love with Orr Family Farm and I can’t wait to bring my kids on another trip to OKC! Located within OKC, Orr Family Farm is a family destination for all ages. Glamping in one of their 13 Conestoga Wagons is only one of the activities the farm offers. S’mores, sunrises, swimming, human foosball, giant jumping pillows, hunting for Walkers, and more will entertain you for your whole stay. And don’t forget their incredible chocolate chip cookies and edible cookie dough!
Stay at the Modern 21C Museum and Hotel
Glamping was amazing fun, but I love a great boutique hotel, too, so we split our overnights with the 21c Museum Hotel in OKC. Their unique spin on contemporary art combined with the industrial heritage of Oklahoma City. And the iconic purple penguins are always fun. Every 21c encourages its guests to play with art, well, the penguin art. And we did just that.
Relax with Spa Treatments at Udånder
No girls’ getaway is complete without spa time. Girl talk in robes is a must for any girls’ weekend. It’s an unwritten rule, I think. Udånder offers a beautiful setting in an unassuming location. Udånder is a Scandinavian steam and sauna spa set in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City and was a wonderful setting for a girlfriend spa getaway. We enjoyed foot soaks, facemasks, and dry and wet saunas before continuing on with our day of girls’ weekend activities.
Visit Factory Obscura at the Womb
Listen, sometimes it’s all for the ‘Gram. The Womb, home to Factory Obscura, is the most Instagrammed building in all of OKC, so I had to see it for myself. And the Factory Obscura, while still expanding to its full 6,000-square-foot space, has a wild modern art collective. We spent some time checking out the modern art exhibits at the collective. One of my favorite pieces is the King’s Mouth, a presentation of Wayne Coyne & The Flaming Lips. The Mix-Tape Experience starts with an interactive Boombox exhibit available 24/7 from Automobile Alley.
Shop with Girlfriends in Plaza District
The Plaza District has some great boutiques. The complex of art galleries, shops, live music, theater, and restaurants also hosts special events. We did a little shopping while we explored the district. I loved Bad Granny’s Bazaar. I found some fab pins. We also stopped and had some pie at Pie Junkie. Actually, we may have had too much pie at Pie Junkie, but you only live once. The pie was incredible. I have no regrets about that pie. None. In fact, I bought a great shirt that said “Thankful for stretchy pants” from Pie Junkie.
We also took time to see and take photos of the murals that line the area around the Plaza District, known as the Plaza Walls
Explore Myriad Botanical Gardens
Something you may not know about me: I have a brown thumb. I kill all the plants, even the ones that shouldn’t be able to be killed (like succulents and hostas and literally everything). So I enjoy gardens and such because I have an appreciation of flora and fauna but also things that I can’t keep alive. The Myriad Botanical Gardens is a 17-acre botanical garden and interactive urban park located in downtown OKC.
The centerpiece of the gardens is the Crystal Bridge Conservatory, home to 750 varieties of tropical and desert plants, a cascading waterfall, and a sky. The unique architecture of the Crystal Bridge structure is worth a visit on its own, as it is over 220 feet long, 70 feet in diameter, and is covered by more than 3,000 sections of translucent, double-layered acrylic panels—it’s wild!
Ride the Wheeler Ferris Wheel
You know it’s a good story when it starts with, “so the guy who owns this bought the old Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel off of eBay.”
It’s true, though. The Wheeler Ferris Wheel, in the redeveloped riverfront plaza Wheeler District, is the 100-foot-high relocated Ferris Wheel from the Santa Monica Pier. In addition to the Ferris Wheel, there are other activities to entertain you—hammocks, swings, bocce ball. There’s a covered shelter for picnics as well as uncovered picnic tables. The area is dog-friendly. It’s perfect for an afternoon with friends or families!
