All the HOCUS POCUS 2 Easter Eggs You May Have Missed
This is your spoiler warning if you have not yet watched HOCUS POCUS 2.
Disney Castle Logo Variant
As the opening Disney Castle Logo scrolls, the variant for this film is a dark, spooky theme, one perfectly apt to represent the Sanderson Sisters and Salem, MA, in the 1600s.
Opening in the Past
Just like the original HOCUS POCUS, HOCUS POCUS 2 opens in the past.
Tony Hale
In the opening in the past, young Winifred has a run-in with Salem’s Reverend Traske (played by Tony Hale). Hale also plays the modern Salem Mayor Traske when the movie jumps to present day.
Billy Butcherson
We meet the young Billy Butcherson in Salem village, which starts the Billy Butcherson backstory.
Calming Circle
To evade the Reverend and his witch hunt, the sisters run away to the Forbidden Wood. The trio are all a bit scared. Young Mary suggests they form a calming circle. Young Winifred agrees without snapping at her sister, a departure from the original film.
“Come Little Children”
As the girls use the calming circle, they hear a voice singing “Come Little Children.” The Witch (played by Hannah Waddingham) appears and lures young Sarah Sanderson closer to her. The Witch’s cloak coloringt is similar to that of Dani’s witch outfit in the original HOCUS POCUS.
In the original HOCUS POCUS, Sarah is the one who sings “Come Little Children” to hypnotize and lure children to she and her sisters. The tune is also known as “Sarah’s Theme” and “Garden of Magic” and was composed by James Horner with lyrics by Brock Walsh.
Life Potion and Book
The Witch tries to get Young Sarah to drink the Life Potion and also passes Book to Young Winifred.
Cat Transformation Spell
As the Young Sanderson Sisters look through the newly acquired Book, they see a spell for “Cat Transformations.” This is the spell they use on Thackery Binx in HOCUS POCUS. Young Mary tells Young Winifred to use it on Young John Pritchett.
Skeleton Sam
Musical transitions are everything and Skeleton Sam by LVCRFT is the song playing after the jump to 2022 Salem.
The Old Salem Magic Shoppe
The Sanderson Sisters’ former home is now home of The Old Salem Magic Shoppe, a novelty magic shoppe owned by Gilbert The Great. Gilbert sells spells books that look like Book, Black Flame Candles, Binx black cat plushes, Sanderson Sisters shirts, and more.
Gilbert has Book locked safely in a case and his own black cat named Cobweb.
Emily Binx
We see a flashback of the original HOCUS POCUS when Emily Binx was killed by the Sanderson Sisters while Gilbert is telling his Halloween story of the trio in his shoppe to a group of families.
Black Flame Candle
Gilbert gives Becca a specially made Black Flame Candle for her 16th birthday, the age at which witches allegedly get their powers.
Birthday Ritual
Becca’s birthday is Halloween and every year for her birthday, she and her, ahem, coven of friends, goes to the Forbidden Wood to perform a birthday ritual, which includes a calming circle and candle lighting. This year, Cassie isn’t joining Becca and Izzy (boy drama) but they take the candle Gilbert made Becca.
Becca lights the candle and the flame turns black as it turns out to be a real Black Flame Candle.
“Come Little Children” part 2
“Come Little Children” is heard again, this time sung by Sarah Sanderson, just as the ground rips open in the shape of a pitchfork and The Sanderson Sisters return.
“The Witches Are Back”
The Sanderson Sisters break out into song, performing “The Witches Are Back,”
written by Elton John and Bernard J.P. Taupin.
Book
Winifred calls to Book and it awakens in the case in The Old Salem Magic Shoppe. Winifred wants to brew the Life Potion.
Fake Sunrise
Mary reminds Winifred and Sarah how they were tricked by a fake sunrise the last time they were risen.
Pretending to be Witches
When the Sanderson Sisters catch Becca and Izzy in the woods, the girls pretend they are also witches, just like Dani did in the original HOCUS POCUS.
Salt, Dark Magic, and the Clever Little White Witch
Becca and Izzy take the Sanderson Sisters to Walgreens to give them “life potions” while trying to escape being eaten.
While at Walgreens, the girls get all the salt they can find to escape the Sisters and protect themselves from dark magic.
In the original HOCUS POCUS, Allison used salt to protect herself and Dani and Winifred called her a “clever little White Witch.”
Iconic Sanderson Sisters Walk
We first see the Sanderson Sisters do their iconic walk in the Walgreens.
“We Must Fly!”
Winifred tells Mary and Sarah, “We must fly!” to escape their fates being sealed again at sunrise!
Winifred grabs the last broom, Sarah grabs on a Swiffer Wetjet, and Mary is on two small Roombas that she lovingly calls her “Broomies.”
In the original HOCUS POCUS, when the trio get alternate means of flight we their brooms are taken, Winnie gets the last broom, Sarah gets a mop, and Mary get a vacuum cleaner.
Cowabunga!
Mary yells out, “Cowabunga!” as she takes flight on her Broomies. This Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles catchphrase is not only funny, but appropriate given that Kathy Najimy (Mary) played Mayor Mira in “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Turtles” TV series.
Amuck, Amuck, Amuck
Sarah says Amuck, Amuck, Amuck as she whooshes away on her Swiffer.
Lucky Rat Tails
At their old home, aka The Old Salem Magic Shoppe, Sarah looks for her lucky rat tails.
Witches Flying Through the Sky in 1993
Gilbert recollects seeing the trio of witches fly through the sky in 1993 and saw when they turned to dust.
Mickey and Minie Pillow Case
Young Gilbert is using a Mickey and Minnie Mouse pillowcase for his Halloween candy bag.
New Black Flame Candle
Gilbert reveals he made a new Black Flame Candle with help from Book, with the remains of the original candle. This is why the candle looks funky.
HIDDEN MICKEY
When Gilbert is telling the witches about Reverend Traske, there is a green crystal in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head behind him in the display case.
Cobweb or Thackery Binx?
Cobweb jumps onto the table in front of the Witches and Sarah thinks that it is Thackery Binx.
Billy Butcherson, part 2
Gilbert digs up Billy from his grave. It turns out that Billy was never actually put back to sleep after the events of the first HOCUS POCUS.
Billy is played by Doug Jones, who played the original Billy Butcherson in the 1993 version—and the wig is the same one he wore in the original film.
We now know what ACTUALLY happened with Billy and Winifred and Sarah because Billy tells Gilbert what happened with Winifred.
Billy was not in fact Winifred’s lover. He shared one kiss with her when they were children (as discussed in the opening past sequence).
Sandy’s Candy Cauldron
Mayor Traske is in line at Sandy’s Candy Cauldron, the candy booth he was so excited to bring back to the fair. This is likely a nod to Disney’s Candy Cauldron at Disney Springs.
“Rotten to the Core” Apple Bobbling
The apple bobbing booth is called Rotten to the Core. An apt name for an apple bobbling booth on Halloween, but also the first song in Disney’s DESCENDANTS—a Disney Channel Original movie that was directed by Kenny Ortega who also directed the first HOCUS POCUS.
Kathy Najimy (Mary) also plays the Evil Queen in Disney’s DESCENDANTS.
“One Way Or Another”
One way or another, you can count on the Sanderson Sisters to always find a stage. The Sisters put the townspeople under a spell as they perform Blondie’s “One Way Or Another (Hocus Pocus 2 Version)” (written by Deborah Harry and Nigel Harrison) on their way to find the mayor.
Halloween Fair Costumes
Among the Halloween fair attendees we see some more costumes:
- Satan and Penny from the first HOCUS POCUS are in line behind Mayor Traske at the Candy Cauldron.
- a Penguin is in front of Traske; a possible nod to Mary Poppins or Wheezy from Toy Story
- The same Madonna costume was worn by Jenny Dennison, Max and Dani’s mom in the first movie
- Tinker Bell
- Sorcerer Mickey Hat
Hocus Pocus on the TV
While they are searching for the Mayor, the trio flies up to several homes, and at the first home, the couple is on the couch watching the original HOCUS POCUS.
“I smell children”
Mary says “I smell children” in the Traske garage, something she says to Dani in the first movie when she’s sniffed her out.
“Shis-ka-Baby”
Mary calls Becca “Shis-ka-Baby,” which is something she calls Dani in the first movie.
Sewing Billy’s Mouth Shut
Winifred sews Billy’s lips shut again, but at least this time they skipped the real moths.
“Heavens to Murgatroyd”
When the trio is fighting the teen coven in the Forbidden Wood, Mary says, “Heavens to Murgatroyd.” “Heavens to Murgatroyd” is what Hanna-Barbera’s Snagglepuss always says.
Parting Words
When the witch trio disappears, Mary and Sarah say the same words they did in the first film. Sarah says, “Goodbye.” Mary says, “Bye-bye.” Instead of calling for Book, Winnifred calls for “Sisters!”
Iconic Sanderson Sisters Walk, part 2
The three teens leave the Forbidden Wood, they start to walk like the Sanderson Sisters.
HOCUS POCUS 2 POST-CREDIT SCENE
Cobweb jumps onto a shelf with a box labeled “B.F. Candle #2.”
Gilbert has created more than one Black Flame Candle with the help of Book.
