What If… everything in the universe existed differently than you know it to be? One choice can change everything and Marvel’s “What If…?” series on Disney+ handles that scenario, with twists based on Marvel canon comic lore.
There are more realities than you can possibly fathom.
~The Watcher
Marvel’s “What If…?” is an upcoming American animated anthology series created by A.C. Bradley for the Disney+ streaming service, based on the Marvel Comics series. Dropping on Disney+ on August 11th, Marvel’s “What If…?” explores alternate turns of events based on different from our familiar MCU characters.
The Watcher & The Storyline: Marvel’s “What If…?” Review
Marvel’s “What If…?” features storylines such as Peggy Carter taking the Super Soldier Serum rather than Steve Rogers, and T’Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill (and the reason why will have you chuckling), while Uatu the Watcher—voiced by Jeffrey Wright—narrates the series and watches the events in the multiverse.
Uatu the Watcher—often known simply as The Watcher— is the overseer of all of the parallel dimensions in the Multiverse. The Watcher is an omnipotent celestial being whose sole job is to watch over Earth without interfering.
The Voices of Marvel’s “What If…?”
If you are looking forward to your favorite MCU stars reprising their roles, many do, including the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Haley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Taika Waititi as Korg, Paul Rudd as Ant-man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, and more.
Masterful storytelling and beautiful animation: Marvel’s “What If…?” Review
While I only screened the first 3 episodes of the 9-part series, each episode of Marvel’s “What If…?” was more impressive than the last. The twists and turns will leave you begging for more action while the artistry and beauty of the illustrative animation style will enrapture you.
The illustration grabbed me immediately. The illustrators aimed to meld classic American illustration, such as what you see from the artists like Norman Rockwell, J. C. Leyendecker, Tom Lovell, and Mead Schaffer and then created their own style within the Marvel world that was their own yet still embraced the reference material.
We love that some characters we only see for moments in the MCU films get more screentime in Marvel’s “What If…?” (like Peggy Carter, for example), and some are even the center of the story. That script flip is an inventive storytelling technique that keeps MCU die-hard fans on their toes.
