I received an ornament from the Macy’s Rwanda Path to Peace line. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
The holidays are about gift giving and giving back. The Macy’s Rwanda Path to Peace line is a holiday gift that does just that. It’s a gift with a purpose.
Those of you who have read my blog for awhile or know me personally know I spent some time working for an international development services company. You many also know that I grew up in a small town in a family that didn’t have a lot. Yet, despite the fact that our family didn’t have a lot of wealth, my parents made sure we gave to others who had less and shared the wealth so to speak, especially at the holiday season.
The Macy’s Rwanda Path to Peace product line sold at Macys.com offers sustainable income to Rwandan basket weavers by allowing them to support their families with dignity and purpose. This handcrafted gold ornament is a limited edition piece created by artisans from Rwanda of raffia/sweetgrass featuring a red ribbon for hanging and comes with its own gift box. This ornament is also signed by the artisan, so you know each one is authentic.
By focusing on poverty reduction through job creation and access to global markets, the Global Goods Partners initiative helps whole communities of people in Rwanda lift themselves out of poverty. This isn’t a charity program, but an initiative that partners with the communities through creating local jobs. The Rwanda Path to Peace program is the longest running program of its kind and has impacted thousands of women and families throughout Rwanda. The weavers earn roughly 10 times the average Rwandan wage.
Which beautiful handcrafted Rwandan item will you choose to make a difference this holiday season?
