THE ADAM PROJECT on Netflix was so touching, we opted to watch this adventure/sci-fi/comedy movie that will tug at your heartstrings again when given a chance for an additional early screening. This is the heartwarming film we all need right now. Keep reading for our THE ADAM PROJECT review.
The Adam Project Review
THE ADAM PROJECT on Netflix is a thrilling throwback movie with nostalgic moments for all ages. This mix of adventure, sci-fi, and comedy was pure fun and heart and had us wanting a sequel. Free Guy’s director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds deliver an out-of-this-world original time-travel adventure.
Loaded with hilarious quotes and some great Easter eggs, THE ADAM PROJECT is reminiscent of some of the best sci-fi films like Back to the Future and Star Wars. Add a dash of Flight of the Navigator and Race to Witch Mountain and you have a formula for a fantastic movie night.
The Adam Project Review – What Works
The soundtrack was lit
Rob Simonsen’s score is brilliant and the use of modern music and classic hits music is the perfect tie-in for the past, current, and present timeline in the movie. The music elements, especially the use of classic hits, really bring home the layered nuance of the multiple points in time throughout Adam’s life.
The casting is on point
While we’ll watch just about anything with Ryan Reynolds, it’s nice to see him play something slightly different than his Deadpool character. Superhero, spy, pilot. They’re roles that all work for him. While THE ADAM PROJECT has plenty of comedic moments, this adventure/sci-fi film has more heart than you’d expect from something with Reynolds.
In fact, it’s the subtle transition from adventure/sci-fi story to one of parenting that will draw you in and make you wonder how Director Shawn Levy pulled that bait-and-switch on you and left you without a box of tissues in hand.
Newcomer Walker Scobell is perfect as young Adam, so perfect it’s uncanny in some moments just how much he looks as though he could be a young Reynolds. And the chemistry Scobell and Reynolds have is so natural. Mark Ruffalo is always the handsome super-nerd, but his character in this film is so much deeper than anything you’ve ever seen in his Bruce Banner performance (through no fault of his own). Jennifer Gardner shines as she always does, and it seems as though playing a mom these days is what she’s often doing, though it’s a role she does well. Zoe Saldaña rolls in hot in her bada$$ness as always.
OMG the feels
It takes a lot for a movie to really stick with you. There are so many relatable aspects to this film. Without spoiling plot points, there are many lessons to be taken away from all of the main characters at a variety of different points in the timeline. And it is how those messages are crafted together so intricately that grab you by the heartstrings so dang hard and won’t ease up until well after the last credits roll that make THE ADAM PROJECT the masterpiece of emotional barrage that it is.
