Last night I bought a bottle of wine for the Thirsty Girl #TGTaste. 2011 Villa Maria Estate Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc was $15.99 in my local store, and well worth every penny. It has definitely replaced my former favorite Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand.
The Villa Marie Estate Sauvignon Blanc was a clear, pale lemon. The nose was a light intensity with lots of tropical fruit and grapefruit, a little herbaceousness, and a hint of minerality.
The palate of this wine was relatively complex and not disappointing. This light-bodied, medium acidity wine had tropical fruit, grapefruit, lemon, and floral notes with a medium finish.
This wine was everything you’d expect from a good Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The Villa Maria Estate is New Zeland’s most awarded winery, and has been making wines for 50 years. In addition to the fact that the wine was quite enjoyable and refreshing, the vineyard has a long-held objective to being environmentally responsible and sustainability is art of their mission. As a greenie, this really makes me happy. Villa Maria states on their website, “sustainability is not an end point but a journey and therefore we are always finding ways to embed sustainable principles into the culture of the organization.” I couldn’t agree more!
Villa Maria has been a member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) since its inception in 1995. One of the SWNZ’s initiatives is focusing on the economical production of quality wines and grapes, with a priority to methods that are safest for the environment and people’s health. All of Villa Maria’s wines are either accredited by SWNZ or in the process of accreditation. “Villa Maria is committed to continuing along the path of sustainability. An energy audit of the wineries is underway to ensure optimum reduction of environmental impact.” Villa Maria’s sustainable practices include heat recovery plants, night air cooling, natural lighting, organic viticulture, hybrid vehicles for sales team, storm weather quality control, renewable energy, and recycling.
I highly recommend this wine. I will be buying it again.
