If you’re caught up on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” streaming on Disney +, then you probably remember Zemo offering both Sam and the girl at the IDP camp “Turkish Delight” in episode 4 to attempt to bribe them. It was quite the little Easter egg, especially for us literally nerds and movie buffs. This candy seemed like the perfect cocktail concoction to create for you, so we’ve made Zemo’s Turkish Delight Cocktail, inspired by Zemo and his Turkish Delight bribe.
But first, why Turkish Delight? And do you even know what it is?
What is Turkish Delight?
Confectioner Haci Bekir Effendi created the Turkish delight we know today back in 1777. Known in Turkey as lokum, the small, sweet, slightly chewy jellied candy squares are Turkey’s most beloved sweet treat. They are typically scattered with chopped pistachios on the inside and generously sprinkled with powdered sugar. Rosewater is the most popular flavor, but they come in a multitude of other flavors as well, such as lemon, orange, raspberry, and more.
The Haci Bekir shop in Istanbul has been selling Turkish delights and other treats for more than 200 years, according to the article on the BBC. This shop owned and run by two women is not only the oldest shop in Istanbul but also one of the 100 oldest shops in the world.
Why did Zemo choose Turkish Delight as a bribe?
While Zemo tells the little girl at the IDP camp that Turkish delight was his son’s favorite candy, that is most certainly not the only reason he has chosen Turkish Delight as his candy of choice for a bribe. Any C.S. Lewis fans out there?
Also, if you recall, Christmas is a main theme throughout the book. As a result of the White Witch’s evil magic, in Narnia, it is “always winter and never Christmas.” When the White Witch asks Edmund what he’d like to eat, it seems as though Edmund is probably asking her for Christmas, too, not just more candy—if you make the parallel between the stark, dismal wartime realities and the similar narrative Lewis has created in Narnia.
Okay, enough about literary parallels and symbolism in movies. Let’s get to Zemo’s Turkish Delight Cocktail.
Just like Turkish Delight, there are loads of recipes available for Turkish Delight cocktails, but we didn’t love any of them, so we created our own.
